These preliminary results clearly show that zebra mussels have the potential
to affect both nutrient availability (measured as SRP) and the plankton.
The reductions in chlorophyll a suggest a strong effect on the plankton
community. Over the coming months, the analysis of our plankton samples
should show whether the composition, as well as the density, are altered
by zebra mussels. Future laboratory studies will provide additional
data on selective feeding by zebra mussels and the changes in the plankton.
These changes are important because the plankton are the base of the food
web supporting fish populations in the lake. Zebra mussels may be
significantly altering the prey base available to these populations.
