How to get trained

Facilitating groups on our challenge course is fun, stimulating, and rewarding work that you can feel good about at the end of each day. Beyond the rewards of working in a meaningful way with a wide range of people, our instructors are drawn to this work by many things: outdoor work in a beautiful setting; a flexible schedule; fabulous coworkers; uniqueness in each program; an excellent wage; the chance to master highly transferable skills; and ongoing opportunities to advance, grow, and learn in a supportive environment. Previous teaching, outdoor, group management and/or facilitation experience is preferred, but integrity and inherent people skills are far more important. Twice yearly we hold a Facilitator Training which provides an introduction to the basics of ropes course facilitation. The training costs $150.00 ($100.00 for UVM students and employees) and is open to the public; it also serves as a group interview for anyone wishing to pursue employment with the UVM ARC. Upon successful completion of this (or another, approved ropes course facilitation training), applicant resumes and/or experiential transcripts are considered. Chosen individuals are then invited to a UVM ARC Orientation, and then to a Refresher Training for established facilitators. We follow up with rescue and gear retrieval trainings. Every third week from May through October we hold shorter workshops on a variety of associated topics to advance the skills and knowledge of our facilitators. As you can see, experiential educators never stop learning!

What kind of facilitator are you?

One factor that makes our team successful is that our facilitators are as diverse and unique as our clients. They come from a variety of backgrounds and possess a wide range of supporting skills, interests and experience. Our facilitators also have a lot in common: they are intuitive, energetic, and charismatic. They can quickly build rapport with others, read group dynamics, and react appropriately to help elicit desired outcomes. They are natural leaders, but they know that facilitation is not about leading the group. It is about helping participants develop team and leadership skills.
