Student Opportunities
Beyond the traditional classroom experience, there are many opportunities for students to get involved with various aspects of Psychology. Consider participating in some of the following.
Serve as a Participant in a Research Study
One way to learn more about psychological research is to participate as a subject in a study yourself. There are many opportunities to be a participant in a study. To identify current opportunities, check regularly; the list is updated on an ongoing basis.
Get Involved in Conducting a Research Study
There are many opportunities to work on a research project yourself. Typically undergraduates get their first research experience by serving as research assistants to faculty and graduate students. You can do so as a volunteer or for academic credit through enrolling in Independent Readings and Research (PSYC 197 & 198). As that webpage describes, in order to arrange to work on research, contact individual faculty who are working in an area of interest to you and discuss the possibilities.

Engage in a Service-Learning Project or a Community-Based Internship
Service-Learning refers to structured, organized learning activities that occur in the context of providing service to the community. UVM offers service-learning courses in many departments related to psychology that can provide you with opportunities to learn in the "real world". In addition, the Service-Learning Internship Course coordinated by UVM's Career Services Office will help you to identify and complete a community placement in which you can earn academic credits through EDSS 239.
Attend Psychology Department Colloquia
Every semester the Psychology Department hosts a variety of colloquia in which distinguished national and international scholars visit UVM to discuss their research. Our colloquia are open to all.
Complete a College Honors Thesis in Psychology
Students with outstanding academic records may qualify to write a Senior Honors Thesis in Psychology through the Honors College. This involves a formal application process through the Honors College and a year-long research or creative project that concludes in a formal defense.
Participate in Student Clubs
UVM students host a variety of clubs that focus on issues that are central to psychology. For example, many clubs involve volunteering in community service and civic engagement. To learn more about student volunteer groups, visit Volunteers in Action/VIA.
