Student Employment Task Force

Phase 1 Report: November 1, 2010 | Final Report: December 1, 2010

Introduction

In August, 2010, a Student Employment Task Force (SETF), comprised of staff members from various University departments, was convened to (1) make specific policy recommendations regarding aspects of administering the FWS program at UVM by November 1, 2010; and (2) recommend means to expand student employment opportunities at UVM, both Federal Work Study (FWS) and non-FWS employment through development of three courses of action, including an analysis of pros and cons by December 1, 2010.  Specifically, the Task Force was asked to consider whether an employing unit should contribute a portion of the FWS costs borne by the University, and whether income-expense units should be treated differently than other UVM units in this regard.  The Task Force was advised that the outcome of its work would support development of new initiatives to enhance the UVM Student Experience.

Task Force Charge

The Student Employment Task Force has been charged to recommend means to expand student employment opportunities at UVM, both Federal Work Study (FWS) and non-FWS employment.  The Director of Student Financial Services, Marie Johnson, has agreed to chair the TF. 

The SETF has been asked to develop three courses of actions, including an analysis of pros and cons, and a recommendation by December 1, 2010.  As a subset to the courses of action development and analysis, the task force is asked to make specific policy recommendation regarding two specific aspects of administering the FWS program.

  1. Should the employing unit contribute a portion of the costs borne by the University?   Most colleges and universities charge employing units 25% or more for a filled FWS position whereas at UVM we bear the entire costs centrally.
  2. Should income-expense units be looked at differently than other units?
