Please note that the process for nominations for Honorary Degrees and Commencement Speaker Candidates for Commencement 2012 has already been completed. Candidates will be announced in January 2012.
In September 2011, the Honorary Degree Work Group initiated the process of identifying Honorary Degree and Commencement Speaker candidates for the May 2013 Commencement Ceremony. The Honorary Degree Work Group will be tasked to narrow these nominations and recommend a list of 3-5 Honorary Degree nominees, as well as a proposed Commencement Speaker, to the Board of Trustees at their May 2012 meeting. The Board’s practice is not to approve specific nominations, but to adopt a resolution authorizing the President to award Honorary Degrees and to select a Commencement Speaker in consultation with the Work Group. The Commencement Speaker may also receive an Honorary Degree.
In conferring an honorary degree and recommending a Commencement Speaker, the University of Vermont has historically recognized distinction in at least one of three general areas:

The Work Group will also consider the following in evaluating nominees:
Please note that the deadline for the May 2013 Honorary Degree and Commencement Speaker nominations is Monday, February 20, 2012. The timeline has been designed to allow time to make arrangements and give notice as appropriate. The complete timeline can be found here.
