Re: President's Commission on Social Change
Recent events on this campus as well as nationally have brought to center stage the need to address and maintain focus on key health and safety challenges of our campus community. In response to these challenges, I have recently instituted the President’s Commission for Social Change. I have asked Dr. Annie Stevens (Student and Campus Life) and Ms. Kathryn Friedman (Diversity and Equity/AAEO) to serve as co-chairs, and I am pleased to report that they have agreed. This new commission is charged with developing recommendations that will address health and safety issues with attention to three specific areas: the abuse of alcohol and other drugs, gender-based and sexual violence, and bias.
The objectives of the commission are: 1) to research, monitor, and report on the health and safety of the campus community in the context of these focal areas, and to assess institutional efforts to deal with such key challenges, 2) to identify major needs and topics of concern, 3) to propose policies and programs to address these needs and concerns, and to promote, maintain and publicize strategic focus on these issues, 4) to collaborate with campus organizations with complementary goals and objectives and 5) to monitor the effectiveness of any proposed policies and initiatives upon implementation.
This commission draws on the strength of students, faculty, and staff with different backgrounds, experiences, and expertise working together for the general well being of our campus community. The positive impact of their work can already be seen in the recently launched Think, Care, Act campaign. I invite you to visit the campaign website (www.uvm.edu/thinkcareact) for an overview of safety-related services and programs at UVM. This website will be updated with facts, figures and ways to get involved as the campaign continues. With the welcome addition of the President’s Commission on Social Change, UVM boasts five Presidential Commissions working to improve the campus community’s climate, health and general wellbeing, all essential to the pursuit of academic excellence at the University of Vermont. For more information on the Presidential Commissions, the President’s website (www.uvm.edu/president) contains information on all five Presidential Commissions as well as my responses to last year’s commission recommendations.
