Re: New Dean of the College of Medicine
Date: July 27, 2007
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Frederick C. Morin, III, M.D., as the 17th Dean of the College of Medicine. He will join us on August 25, 2007 from the University of Buffalo, State University of New York, where he is the A. Conger Goodyear Professor and Chair of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and Chief of Pediatric Service for Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and Kaleida Health. He also served as Interim Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Buffalo and as Interim Dean of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences from 2005 to 2006.
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Morin completed his residency in Pediatrics at Stanford University and a Research Fellowship in Neonatology at the University of California, San Francisco. He subsequently joined the University of Rochester as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology. In 1986 he moved to SUNY Buffalo, and in 1989 was named Chief of the Neonatology Division at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo and Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Physiology. He was promoted to Professor and became Vice Chairman of Research in 1994. In 1997, he was named Chair of Pediatrics and Pediatrician-in-Chief at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo.
Dr. Morin is an accomplished researcher, physician, educator, and administrator, and I am very much looking forward to his leadership of the College, which will be critical to our collective pursuit of the vision for the University of Vermont as the nation’s premier small public research university. On behalf of the University community, my thanks go to Provost John Hughes, who chaired the search committee, and to all of its members for their exemplary work in bringing forward a stellar group of finalists for an appointment that we all know is of far-reaching importance for the College, the University, Fletcher Allen Health Care, and the State of Vermont. Please also join me in offering heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Fogarty for his service as interim dean during the last year. Dr. Fogarty has led the College through a number of key initiatives, including a successful reaccreditation, and we greatly appreciate his outstanding service to the University.
