Re: Health Awareness Initiative

I am writing to encourage you to join me in an important health awareness initiative.

As you know, UVM has made “a comprehensive commitment to liberal education, environment, health and public service.” One of our many objectives is to “infuse . . . personal responsibility for health and wellness . . . throughout the academic and co-curricular experiences of all UVM students.” This goal includes engaging individuals in the prevention of chronic health conditions and extends beyond the classroom to the entire campus community.

In recognition of this, we have recently partnered with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont to provide a comprehensive and confidential online Health Assessment that will provide each of us a valuable opportunity to learn more about our health.

The Health Assessment asks you to provide basic information about your health and then presents online information and articles based on your individual needs. I recently completed the assessment and have found the results to be both informative and balanced. I learned what I am doing well and where I have room for improvement.

There are two ways to participate. You can take the Health Assessment on your own, or you can join the Health Awareness Team Challenge. The Challenge will provide the opportunity to join a community of colleagues taking the assessment and will render you eligible to win one of several cash prizes.

I know that some of us are sensitive to issues of confidentiality, and I want to emphasize that your privacy is very important to the University. The Health Assessment website is a secure, encrypted site that is managed by a third party. The personally-identifiable information you provide on this assessment will never be shared with Blue Cross and Blue Shield without your express consent. It will never be shared with UVM, and will never affect your health benefit coverage in any way.

To learn more about the Challenge, I invite you to visit the new Health Matters web page at www.uvm.edu/hrs/healthmatters.
