Re: Dismantling Rape Culture Conference and Policy Update
Recently, I approved changes to the University’s Sexual Misconduct and Assault - Students Policy following review and comment from governance groups and various campus constituents. I want to take this opportunity to reiterate the University’s unwavering resolve to uphold our commitment to a campus free of all forms of harassment, exploitation, intimidation, and violence by restating the opening lines of the policy statement:
Sexual misconduct and assault are prohibited and will not be tolerated at the University of Vermont. Any act that falls within the definition of sexual misconduct or assault or attempted sexual misconduct or assault is a violation of University policy. Disciplinary sanctions for any member of the University community engaging in such an act may include suspension or expulsion from the University, termination of University employment and referral for criminal investigation and prosecution under Vermont law.
Sexual misconduct and assault have long-lasting and detrimental effects on individuals, our entire community, and our mission to prepare UVM students to lead productive, responsible, and creative lives. University policy prohibits any form of sexual violence.
I also want to take this opportunity to encourage members of the UVM community to participate in the 6th annual Dismantling Rape Culture Conference on April 12, 2011, sponsored by the UVM Women’s Center at the Dudley H. Davis Center. Information about the Conference and the schedule of workshops is available at the Women’s Center website. The Conference serves as an excellent opportunity for members of the UVM community to gather and engage in dialogue about this critical topic.
