Re: Convocation 2009
Each fall, we begin the academic year with Convocation, a celebration to usher in the new academic year. Continuing a tradition started last year, Convocation will be held the evening before the first day of classes in the Roy L. Patrick Gymnasium, on Sunday, August 30, 2009. I am writing to advise you of this year’s schedule and to encourage your participation.
- Convocation is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. — the evening before the first day of classes — in the Patrick Gym. After Convocation, we will adjourn and process as a community to the University Green for the Class of 2013 Candlelight Induction Ceremony. Afterwards there will be a book signing in the Dudley H. Davis Center.
- At Patrick Gym, the keynote speaker will be Tracy Kidder, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and author of Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World. The book follows the true story of Dr. Paul Farmer, an infectious disease specialist at Harvard University and founder of Partners in Health, who has made his mission to transform health care on a global scale by focusing on the world’s poorest and sickest communities. Please visit the Convocation web site for more information: Convocation 2009
- We are requiring all first-year students to read Mountains Beyond Mountains over the summer. Copies of the book are available at the UVM Bookstore. In addition, copies for faculty and staff are available at a 20% discount through the Bookstore with a UVM ID. We expect virtually all of the more than 2,500 first-year students to attend Convocation. The occasion will again be a memorable gathering of the campus community.
- While there will be no formal curricular component of the first-year summer reading, we invite all members of the community to take the opportunity to read Mountains Beyond Mountains and to explore ways to engage in discussions in the fall around the book whether inside or outside the classroom.
I hope that you will mark your calendars now for this very exciting and special occasion and that you will join us at the Convocation ceremony in the Patrick Gymnasium on Sunday, August 30 at 6:00 p.m. More information about Convocation will be available later this summer. I am confident that Convocation 2009 will be a remarkable and memorable experience and an exceptional way to commence the new academic year. Until we see you again (then, I hope, if not before), Rachel and I send you every good wish for a rewarding, relaxing, and productive summer as UVM prepares to welcome a class with exceptional academic talent and unprecedented diversity.
