RE: CatAlert Emergency Messaging

Date: February 4, 2008

As part of our comprehensive efforts to make the campus as safe as possible, we are in the final stages of putting into place a new rapid emergency notification system that will be known as CatAlert.

CatAlert was implemented after a thorough evaluation and testing process by an internal team. It will give us the ability to deliver an emergency message to all students, faculty, and staff simultaneously by phone, email, and text messaging.

As with any system that requires input from the users it is intended to serve, CatAlert will be effective only if we all do a good job adding, and keeping current, our emergency contact information. Making our relatively safe campus safer, and acquiring a higher degree of preparedness to manage emergency situations optimally, requires effort and involvement from each and every one of us. Please note that in order to receive emergency alerts, be it a report on lethal violence or a release of hazardous materials, for example, you must register your emergency contact information by following the link provided below.

An equally necessary element of making CatAlert successful is the commitment and discipline to use it only in emergency situations, and not for convenience. You have my assurance that it will not be used to disseminate information for which other distribution means are readily available and more appropriate. It will only be used for emergency situations in which timely notification is critical.

I urge you to do your part by following the link below, where you will find instructions for adding and maintaining your emergency contact information. If you have questions about CatAlert, please contact Chief Gary Margolis at Police Services (Gary.Margolis@uvm.edu). We will be announcing a test of the system sometime in the middle of February.
