Re: Administrative Appointments and Interim Provost Search
Vice President for Finance and Administration: Richard Cate joined his alma mater, UVM, as Interim Vice President for Finance and Administration in May of 2008 and since that time has performed the duties of his office in an exemplary fashion that has earned the trust and respect of all campus constituencies. After consultation with the Faculty Senate Executive Council and other governance leaders and with the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce that Mr. Cate has now accepted a regular appointment as Vice President for Finance and Administration. He also serves as Treasurer of the University by appointment of the Board of Trustees. I know that the community will join me in supporting Richard in a role that has always been critical and that is all the more so now as we work together to address the serious but manageable challenges we are facing today along with virtually all institutions of higher education.
Interim Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations: I am also very pleased to announce that Kathleen Kelleher (who is also a UVM alum and who served as Interim Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations for the first eight months of the calendar year 2007) has accepted an appointment once again as Interim Vice President. It is my hope that Ms. Kelleher will serve through FY 2010. I will be consulting closely with governance leaders and with the Board of Trustees about the timing and process for making a regular appointment to this important position.
Search for Interim Provost: With John Hughes’s announcement that he will step down from his position as Provost and Senior Vice President at the end of this fiscal year, it is imperative that we identify and appoint an Interim Provost as quickly as possible. Again after consultation with the Board of Trustees and the Faculty Senate Executive Council, I have decided that the search for an Interim will be internal and that it will be followed by a national search for a regular appointment on a timetable yet to be determined. I am therefore soliciting applications from tenured members of the UVM faculty who hold the rank of Professor or who are eligible for appointment at that rank. Nominations and letters of application along with curricula vitae and three letters of support should be submitted no later than March 27, 2009 to me (with queries about the application process to be directed to Dr. Gary Derr). I am seeking a colleague who combines the maturity, judgment, and integrity requisite for the discharge of the duties of Provost with deep knowledge of the history of UVM, its traditions of shared governance, and its administrative environment and with demonstrable commitment to academic excellence and diversity. Experience at the level of dean or above with the management of complex academic and institutional programs is highly desirable. Applications from women and minorities are strongly encouraged.
Also regarding the interim provost appointment, in a process that has been approved by the Faculty Senate Executive Council, I will review the applications received by the deadline and select two to four finalists. I will then ask that the governance groups on campus (the Faculty Senate, the Staff Council, the Student Government Association, and the Graduate Student Senate) hold interviews of each of the finalists with their leadership groups (e.g., the Faculty Senate Executive Council) and provide me with a written statement of majority and minority views on the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate. I will also solicit the views of an ad hoc committee of the Board of Trustees that will interview the finalists. I hope to make an appointment in time for the Interim Provost designate to have the opportunity to consult closely with Provost Hughes and to learn from him while he is still in office; I therefore expect to make an appointment no later than the third week in April.
