Re: Process and Timeline for the Appointment of an Interim Dean

It has been our pleasure to work with Dean Eleanor Miller. An exceptional teacher and scholar, she has led the College of Arts and Sciences with distinction and honor since 2005 and has accomplished much during that time. We offer heartfelt thanks for her service.

As indicated in our letter to you before the holidays, we are writing to update you on the process and timeline for appointing an Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. We are committed to a process that is necessarily expedited, but also consultative. We will talk with a variety of groups on campus about the qualities we should be seeking in an Interim Dean. These groups will include the chairs and directors of the departments and programs of the College, members of the Dean’s Office staff, and the Executive Council of the Faculty Senate.

The input we receive at these meetings will shape our shared conception of the important criteria to be applied in the selection of the Interim Dean. In addition, we are seeking guidance from the faculty and staff of the College, including nominations of faculty tenured at the rank of associate professor and of professor, self-nominations, and any concerns or perspectives on the College deanship you might wish to share with us. Please either:

Email your nominations, applications, and comments to citing CAS Interim Dean as the subject line, or

  • Send a sealed letter marked confidential to Jane Knodell, 348 Waterman.

If you are nominating an individual for the position of Interim Dean, your nomination materials should specifically highlight administrative experience and background that qualify the candidate for consideration. By copy of this memo to all members of the UVM community, we invite broad feedback and nominations for this critical appointment.

We would appreciate receiving information by Friday, January 15, 2011. We will value and weigh your input carefully as we proceed. We will review nominations and the advice received and will then bring forward for broader consideration finalists for meetings with various people in the days from January 18 through January 21, including the Faculty Senate Executive Council and the chairs and directors of the departments and programs of the College. We expect to name an interim dean by the week of January 25th.

Finally, we are also proceeding with a search for the Deanship of the College of Arts and Sciences.  We will announce details of that process once we have appointed an interim dean. The person appointed as interim will be allowed to apply for the regular appointment.
