Episode 05b: Zipfery, random walk, unexpected transfigurations

Summary:

Please start at 4:00 and watch until 23:00; lecture from Season 10 (2016-09-13). Full blurb: After a tour of some of Zipf's power-lawful observations about sociotechnical systems from 1949, we outline the strangeness of the random walk first return problem. Our disoriented friend will definitely return but we can expect to wait forever. Random walk shapes give us an opening into scaling relations and we touch on fractional walks. We conclude with the observation that very reasonably distributed variables may be very reasonably connected to others through an inverse power law leading to a power-law size distribution. We'll see this again with our investigations of robustness.

Doctor Who could end very badly (but it won't because of stories).
