How can the CUPS office Help UVM Faculty & Staff?

Community-Based Education and Teaching:

Service-Learning Pedagogy

One of the main functions of the Office for Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning is to facilitate training and education about service-learning pedagogy. If you have questions about service-learning, or would like to know if your course qualifies as a service-learning course, contact our office.  CUPS staff members are also available for classroom visits and service-learning workshops for students, community members, faculty, and staff.

For examples of service-learning resources, click here.

Faculty Fellows for Service-Learning Program
This program is offered every winter for faculty members who are interested in exploring service-learning or formalizing their efforts. Fellows recieve training and support from CUPS Staff, both during this intensive series of workshops, and throughout the year.

Supporting Service-Learning Courses

Service-Learning Course Designation
The major goal of identifying and publicizing a standard set of criteria for "service-learning" courses is to clarify communications with students, faculty, staff, and community members regarding the meaning of "service-learning" designation. Such clearly defined designation may also help in assessment and monitoring activities, illustrating standards and best practices of service-learning, highlighting special characteristics of certain curricular activities, and public relations.

Service-Learning Teaching Assistant Program
This program is designed to provide faculty and their community partners with support for service-learning courses, and to provide UVM students with training and skills in service-learning pedagogy and college teaching.  Students who serve as Service-Learning Teaching Assistants are offered a range of compensation options, and may qualify for a monetary AmeriCorps Education Award that can be used to pay back student loans or fund future education costs.

Community-Based Research

The CUPS offices provides training and support for faculty, staff, students and community members who would like to participate in community-based research projects.  If you are interested in a potential research project, if you are looking for a partner for a research project, or would like more information on this form of scholarship, contact the CUPS office.

The Community Participatory Action Research Network (CPAR) is also supported by CUPS.  This network of colleagues meets regularly to support community-based research efforts and to advocate for recognition of this type of scholarship. Visit the Community-Based Research page for more information.

Partnership Services

If you are looking for individual or group, short-term or long-term service-learning project for a course, call to speak with a member of our staff about local organizations and programs that may be an appropriate match.  (Contact Information)  This office can also provide you with the tools necessary to make these partnerships meaningful and productive.  See our trainings, events, and resources. Financial Support

The CUPS office coordinates a Planning and Implementation Grant program to support faculty who are creating service-learning courses; we also offer funding for ongoing work through our Engaged Scholarship Expenses Fund (new in 2008). Other opportunities for Financial Support from the CUPS Office may be available as well, including covering the cost of attending Service-Learning or Community-Based Research conferences/ workshops off-campus. In addition, the Faculty Fellows for Service-Learning program provides stipends to participating faculty that may be used to further their professional development.
