Planning and Implementation Grants for Service-Learning

Winter/Spring 2010 Classes
Application Deadline: October 30, 2009

Applications are invited from all UVM faculty members for mini-grants of up to $1,000 to cover expenses associated with any of the following activities:

  • alter an existing course to include service-learning pedagogy,

  • develop a new course involving service-learning activities, or

  • initiate a long-term service-learning project or partnership.

The Office of Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning will notify grant recipients by mid-October. For budgetary reasons, grants awarded in November must be used by June 30, 2010.

Special Focus Fall 2009:

Proposals addressing current economic challenges are strongly encouraged to apply.  At least two grants will be awarded in the following topic areas: Housing, Nutrition and Food Security, Energy and Fuel, Youth Development, Workforce Development, Economic Challenges in VT, and Community Organization Capacity-Building.

Please submit a two to three page application including: contact information, description of the service-learning program or activity for which you are requesting funds, proposed community partners, and a detailed budget request* not to exceed $1,000 to:

Applications are due no later than Friday, October 2, 2009.  Grant Recipients will be notified in mid-October.  Expenses must be tracked and utilized within one year from award notification; an impact report will be required at the expiration of your grant. 

Examples of Expenses

Funding may be used for any cost associated with completion of a service-learning project. Examples of potential expenses include:

  • Transportation expenses to a site for students, or to campus for community partners;
  • Materials and supplies to complete a service-learning project;
  • Resources and/or books related to your community-based topic, or for providing content-related materials to partners;
  • Training expenses for students, partners, or faculty associated with skill-building directly related to the project.
