May 2015

It has been quite a year. As a community we have dealt with tragedy, triumph, and terrible weather. Through it all, we have worked together to make our community as engaged, healthy, and successful as possible. We tip our hats to all your efforts to make a positive contribution to UVM and Burlington. And of course, congratulations to our graduating students - you've made it!

This will be the last Off Campus Life issue for this semester, but we have more issues this summer. Stay tuned for specific emails from us about exciting, upcoming events!

Have a great summer!
Amanda, Gail, and John

Moving? Check out SMOP!

Each spring, UVM, Champlain College, Chittenden Solid Waste District, Burlington Code Enforcement, Myers, Casella, and ReSOURCE partner to host a FREE community swap and recycling event aptly named the Spring Move Out Project.

Students and area residents can bring clothing, books, household items, furniture, and non-perishable food items. This popular street swap encourages reuse, recycling, and overall better management of unwanted items during move-out each May. (If you're moving, keep these moving tips in mind!)

Furniture in poor condition and other trash is accepted for a fee ($5 to $25) at dumpsters on site. Items not claimed during the event will be donated to local charities, including ReSOURCE, the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program, and the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.

Last year we helped keep more than 10 tons of material from clogging Burlington's neighborhood greenbelts - and swapped several tons more!

Save the date for this year's SMOP and visit us at either location:
Wednesday, May 20
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Loomis Street and Lower Buell Street

SMOP is also in need of volunteers for an hour or two between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. If you're interested in helping make the 15th annual SMOP a success, click here for more volunteer information and to register!

Cookies in the Library

A much-anticipated end of semester tradition, Cookies in the Library brings Edmunds Middle School students and other children to the Bailey/Howe Library to wish UVM students good luck on their exams and thank them for being good neighbors throughout the year.

Special thanks to Amanda Adams ('11) and her crew from Edmunds Middle School (who decorated and distributed the cookies), Jesse Lauer and the team from Sodexo's bakeshop (who baked off the cookies), Vermont Cookie Love for providing the delicious cookie dough, UVM Libraries for hosting, and students who graciously accepted the cookies with such excitement and gratitude. Hope your exams went well!

Check out photos from this semester's event!
