March 2016

Many legends surround both Saint Patrick and the celebration of his life - check out the infographic below! We hope that this year's St. Patrick's Day once again shows how much we care for the place that we share by celebrating in ways that lessen the impact and keep us safer, like:

$350/Month? Plus giving back -
all in one rental!

Dismas House is a supportive community for both former prisoners transitioning from incarceration and for college students who are also in transition. Living in community accomplishes the Dismas mission of reconciliation.

Community is fundamentally about building relationships, and it is precisely the relationship between the offender and their community that is broken, first by the crime committed and subsequently by the resulting incarceration. In reconciliation, wholeness is restored to the former prisoner and to society.

This community is centered around a shared evening meal and the process of transitioning to independent living. Rent is $350/month and includes utilities and those dinners each night. There is space for multiple students in two locations in Burlington and Winooski. For more information contact Alec Ewald or visit their website

Don't Pay Extra Rent

You may think that if your lease term ends on May 31st, your tenancy ends and you are done - but you would be WRONG. As the "Renting in Vermont Handbook" states:

"Tenants who wish to move out at the end of the lease term should give the landlord written notice of their intention at least one full rental period (or two in Burlington) before the lease expiration date. Otherwise, the tenant could be held liable for the rent for the month after the lease expires if the apartment goes unrented."

Be sure to give your landlord a heads up 60 days before you are moving out!

Find out more about your rights & responsibility as a renter by reading OSCR's Off Campus Living Guide or VT Tenants' Renting in Vermont Handbook.

You've no doubt noticed these unusual off kilter windows if you have spent anytime traveling around Vermont. Find out more about this peculiar piece of Vermont architectural language, including the reason behind it's most common name - a "witches window" - in this article. If you are interested in learning more, there is actually a whole book on the topic put out by the Vermont Historical Society.
