June 2016

We want to acknowledge several recent tragedies. The shootings in Orlando targeting LGBTQ People of Color earlier this month, the attack on the Istanbul Ataturk Airport that killed or injured hundreds of people, and today the accidental death on campus when a worker at the First Year Residence Hall construction site died as the result of injuries suffered after a fall from a significant height.

Although all of these incidents differ in scale, specifics, and geography, what they have in common is the grief we feel at each of them. And of course our thoughts are with the friends and family of those affected by them.

We also want to remind everyone that ff you feel you need support, please contact the Counseling Center (for students) at (802) 656-3340 or InvestEAP (for employees) at (802)-864-3270.

Emily, Gail, & John

The rest of this newsletter includes information that was originally planned to be released back in May and includes important information on upcoming events.

SMOP '16!

Hopefully you had the opportunity to witness SMOP '16 either as a volunteer, participant or bystander. We were lucky to have perfect weather for an outdoor event like this. Community'mindedness was beautifully in the air - even a lost wallet was found and returned to its frantic owner by an participant. Check out our infographic - you won't believe how tall our "couch tower" got this year!

Fireworks!

If you want to experience the biggest fireworks display in VT then join Burlington's Park, Recreation & Waterfront Department on July 3rd - not the 4th! Check out the full list of events, parking tips, and other important information here.

But remember that setting off your own fireworks (firecrackers, Roman Candles, or fountains) is illegal without a permit. Even though it is legal to sell them, it is not legal to these types of fireworks in your possession without a permit. Check out WCAX's story explaining the ins and outs of fireworks - it includes information about the negative impact on pets.

At the end of the day, it is better to let Burlington Parks, Recreation, & Waterfront take care of the fireworks - so you can focus on enjoying them - legally.
