blue barTo borrow the Parent PLUS Loan your parent will need to Apply for a PLUS Loan online. Submitting the loan application will prompt a credit review. Your parent will be given the results of the credit review immediately, along with further options in the case of a denial.

The Federal Direct Parent PLUS loan is a federal loan that may be borrowed by the parents of a dependent student. This loan is offered as an option for your family to cover educational expenses at UVM.

Information about this loan will be submitted to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) and will be accessible by guaranty agencies, lenders and schools determined to be authorized users of the data system.

If no parent will be borrowing a PLUS Loan on your behalf, please email SFS requesting that the loan be declined in your award and specify the aid year. Please send this email from your UVM email account and include your 95#.

Steps to complete the PLUS Loan Application

  1. Gather the following information that is needed to complete the application:
    • Verified FSA ID
    • Permanent address and mailing address (if different than permanent)
    • Telephone number and email address
    • Alien Registration Number (if parent is an eligible non-citizen)
    • Employer name,address, and telephone number
    • Student first, middle and last name
    • Student SSN, date of birth, address and telephone number
  2. The parent should log in at studentloans.gov using their FSA ID.
  3. From the Parent Borrower tab, select “Apply for a PLUS Loan”.
  4. Select “Parent Borrower” as the borrower type and submit all requested information. The application is not completely submitted until the credit check result is received.
  5. If loan is approved, and this is your first time borrowing a Parent PLUS Loan at UVM, "Complete a Loan Agreement for a PLUS Loan (MPN)". Complete as the Parent of a Dependent Undergraduate Student.
