Patricia Riley is a versatile educator, with teaching experience in instrumental, vocal, and general music at the college, high school, middle school, and elementary school levels. Prior to coming to UVM, she served for four years on the music education faculty at The Crane School of Music, State University of New York at Potsdam. Her public school experience includes twelve years in the Poultney (VT) School District, and eight years in school districts in New Jersey.
Dr. Riley is also Music Education Program Coordinator for the College of Education and Social Services (CESS), and serves as the liaison between the Department of Music and Dance and CESS. On the National level, she is currently Chair of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Council for Music Composition, and former Chair of the NAfME Collegiate Advisory Council. Dr. Riley was Research Advisor for the NAfME Music Composition/Theory Sub-Committee and in that capacity co-wrote the 2014 Music Composition/Theory National Music Standards, as well as wrote the three Music Composition Theory Model Cornerstone Assessments.
In addition to her long affiliation with the nationally acclaimed Music-COMP (Music Composition Online Mentoring Program), Dr. Riley has spent time in India, Mexico, and China, where she has conducted research on music education, and supervised students in Faculty Led Programs Abroad. She has presented papers at numerous international, national, regional, and state conferences, including:
