While all tenured and tenure track GSB faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly activities, teaching, and make significant service contributions to support the mission of the school, the purpose of this teaching load policy is to encourage and reward the effort of tenured faculty members to produce high-quality impactful scholarly contributions.
The normal teaching load for untenured TT faculty members is 4 three credit courses per academic year.
In accordance with benchmarking with our peer and comparison AACSB accredited schools, the normal teaching load for a tenured faculty member is 5 courses (14 to 15 credits—the 14 credits accommodate SIMBA one and two credit courses) per academic year. However, the actual teaching load will vary between 4, 5 or 6 courses per academic year based on a faculty members’ research productivity using the following point system and the GSB Intellectual Contributions guidelines.
The minimum teaching load will be four courses unless the appointment contract (e.g., faculty appointed as endowed chairs) specifies otherwise. To incentivize and support research outcomes in terms of publications in top tier journals the Dean will also provide summer support funds for each article in a Top Tier publication. The exact amount to be provided will vary each year depending on availability of research support funds but will generally be around $5,000 per article published *only* in GSB’s top tier journals as per the GSB Intellectual Contributions guidelines.

Teaching loads are determined by the number of points earned within a rolling 5-year time frame as follows:

For purposes of calculation:
- The “date of acceptance” is the reference date for publications. Faculty must enter the date of acceptance in Digital Measures for tracking purposes.
- “Year” refers to the time period between September 1 to August 31.
- Only publications accepted after joining UVM count towards course load adjustment.
- Faculty can appeal points assigned for journal publications if the journal’s ranking changes in the time period between article submission and acceptance. Faculty must provide evidence that the article was submitted before the change in ranking occurred.
The Dean may also provide a reduced teaching load using available external funding—via endowed chairs, research grants that are sufficient to support the full salary of an adjunct including benefits, or other external sources—or other extenuating factors (e.g., burdensome teaching assignment).
