University of Vermont Professor and conservation biologist Joe Roman recently spoke to media about his study on Killer Whales and how they affect marine ecosystems.

Whale expert Joe Roman points out that several models have shown that the removal of whales and other marine mammals does not lead to increases in fish catches, and in some cases fishery yields have been increased in the presence of whales. Roman states whales are actually beneficial to the environment, saying that great whales act as what he calls “ecosystem engineers”.

Roman’s studies was featured in Vice, Smithsonian, International Press Syndicate, and Iceland Review.
