East Montpelier--On July 10 Vermont  4-Her's had a chance to test their cattle judging skills at the 2017 State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest, competing against others in their age group for rosette ribbons and top-10 placements.

The annual contest, sponsored by University of Vermont Extension 4-H, was held at Fairmont Farms--The Haven in East Montpelier. The 4-H'ers, ages 8 to 18, judged five classes of Holsteins from the farm's herd.

The top winners in each age group, in order of placement, were:

  • Seniors (14 and older): Seth Carson, Newbury; Joseph Real, Georgia; Isabel Hall, East Montpelier; Morgan Conant, Randolph; Matt Ouellette, Weybridge; Averi Salley, Ferrisburgh; Alexis Lawson, Sutton; Courtney Simpson, Sutton; Gabe Howe, Tunbridge; Ted Hartsock, Lyndonville
  • 12- and 13-year-olds: Caroline Kirby, Montpelier; Molly Callan, Berkshire; Keenan Thygesen, Tunbridge; Lincoln Michaud, East Hardwick; Sadie Ellner, Morrisville; Maya Jerose, Fairfield; Hannah Dolloff, Springfield; Charles Haynes, East Montpelier
  • 10- and 11-year-olds: Gabriel Michaud, East Hardwick; Whitney Dunklee, Vernon; Abby Carson, Newbury; Haley Michaud, East Hardwick; Elizabeth Brown, Vernon; Donovan Noyes, East Montpelier; Hailey DeLaBruere, Derby, and Sam Callan, Berkshire (tie); Dylan Slack, Bethel; Zach Johnson, Tunbridge; Juliet Allen, Montpelier.
