Intro to Ag Financial Management

Time: 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: Three Vermont Locations
Description: Make this the year you bravely step into the world of farm finances! With three top-notch ag financial management specialist to lead the way, Intro to Ag Financial Management will help you approach farm finances fearlessly. This course provides farmers with the knowledge they need to understand and complete a balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement. Participants will learn the basics of budgeting and skills to anticipate the financial needs of their farm operations. Participants can choose to participate in a clinic with one-to-one assistance at no additional charge. Classes will be offered simultaneously in multiple locations in Vermont, with an on-site instructor at each location.

Registration discounts are available for people who have completed Growing Places and who register by the early registration deadline. Scholarships are available. Poultry Production: Profiting- Layers, Broilers, Turkeys, Ducks

Description: The course is for aspiring or beginning farmers (individuals with limited or no experience with poultry rearing) seeking to learn about poultry production, marketing, processing, and sales of poultry and poultry products in New York State. You do not necessarily need to be raising poultry in NYS to benefit from this course.Many new farmers get started with poultry, because it’s a relatively low-investment enterprise with a fairly quick turnaround time from investment to revenue. The margins can be slim though, and you need all the skill you can acquire in order to produce a safe product and have a profitable enterprise. This course was designed to help!

RAW MILK MEETING FOR RAW MILK PRODUCERS WITH RURAL VERMONT

Leasing Your Land to a Farmer

Description: There is a growing need for affordable land for new and expanding farmers in Vermont. Farming on land held by non-farmers can be a win-win opportunity for owners and farmers. This informational session will help private landowners better understand how to make their land available for farming and maintain positive arrangements with farmer-tenants. It will also help community groups to better understand how they can support farmland leasing in their communities.

Vegetable Farming: From Season-Long Care to Harvest

Description: This course is for serious aspiring farmers or those with at least one growing season of vegetable farming experience. You should already have a basic understanding of how to select crops, manage bed prep, seeding, and transplanting. This course is focused specifically on production systems used in the Northeast, so is targeted to people farming in that region.This 5-week course will take you from transplanting to harvest, including information on in-season fertility; integrated pest management including pest ID and control; weed control options; harvesting strategies; and tips for marketing your products. Be prepared to create an in-season fertility and pest/weed control plan as part of this course. Weekly homework will focus on preparing you to make good decisions in the coming growing season.

Practical Produce Safety: Write a Produce Safety Plan for Your Farm

More and more produce buyers are asking the farms they buy from if they have a farm food safety plan. UVM Extension’s Center for Sustainable Agriculture is offering a day-long hands-on workshop on writing a farm safety for small and diversified fruit and vegetable farmers who market directly and locally. This is a great chance to get your farm manager/crew leaders trained in on-farm produce safety practices.
You will leave this workshop with a concise plan for you, your customers, and your employees. Cost: $30 or $15 per person if more than one person is coming from one farm.

Filing a Schedule F: Tax Preparation for Farmers Webinar

Dennis Kauppila, UVM Extension Agriculture & Farm Business Management Specialist delves into the federal tax code as it applies to farm businesses. Wondering about depreciation, deductions, and Schedule F forms? Do you know where to go to learn more, get the right forms, and find help? This webinar will answer common questions about filing federal income taxes for farmers and help you find the resources you need to file accurately and on time. Dennis Kauppila worked on Vermont farms in the 1970s before earning BS and MS degrees in agriculture at UVM. He started working with UVM Extension in 1983 and now works with farmers on financial management and business planning.
