UVM NEUROSCIENCE LINKS Anatomy and Neurobiology Biobehavioral Research Cluster Biology Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit Helix Human Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory Neurology Neuroscience Graduate Training Neurosurgery Pharmacology Psychiatry Psychology Vermont Chapter Society for Neuroscience

The Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology has been awarded a competitive renewal of its Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in Neuroscience (5 P20 RR016435) funded by the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health. The $11,197,450 award will fund the research projects of four junior neuroscience investigators. Lead investigators are Rodney Parsons, chair and professor of Anatomy and Neurobiology, and Cynthia Forehand, professor of Anatomy and Neurobiology.

The Neuroscience COBRE seeks to

• Establish the research and intellectual infrastructure to support a University-wide Center for Neuroscience Excellence at the University of Vermont. Goals of this aim are to
1. continue a mentoring program to support junior neuroscience faculty;
2. maintain an imaging/physiology core
3. to support the research projects of the neuroscience community;
4. maintain a cellular/molecular core
5. to support the research projects of the neuroscience community;
6. support a University-wide Neuroscience Seminar Series and Annual Neuroscience Retreat;
7. facilitate dialogue between basic and clinical scientists that promotes development of collaborative and translational research; and 
• Support the research development of a core group of junior faculty who will be future leaders in the Center for Neuroscience Excellence. Faculty supported and their project titles are:
1. Alan Howe (Pharmacology): Spatial regulation of protein kinase A signaling during growth cone guidance
2. Miguel Martin-Caraballo (Biology): Developmental regulation of GluR2 AMPA receptor subunit expression
3. Jeffrey Spees (Medicine): Adult bone marrow stem cells for CNS repair
4. Uma Wesley (Microbiology and Molecular Genetics): Role of Dipeptidyl Peptidase IV (DPPIV) in peripheral neurogenesis and neuroblastomas

The development of the Center for Neuroscience Excellence is guided by a group of senior neuroscientists:

• Mahendra Rao, Vice President of Research in Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Technologies, Invitrogen
