Severin's NSF proposal entitled 'Programmable Catalysts Designed to Replicate Flexible Polymers' has been funded. As part of this research, we aim to develop catalysts — large molecular strips built with chirality-assisted synthesis - which facilitate the accurate replication of man-made polymers. Our Senior Undergraduate Researcher Alexander Olson has been endowed with a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) award from UVM's Office for Undergraduate Research. These prestigious fellowships are awarded to support creative research of UVM undergraduates. They provide a personal stipend and also cover costs for research expenses. Alex will be utilizing the funds to investigate the organocatalytic functionalization of proteins, using shapes created with chirality-assisted synthesis. Many congratulations, Alex!

"Chemistry Fun" Outreach at the ECHO Lake Center

Our group organized a "Chemistry Fun" event today at the ECHO Lake Center in Burlington, VT. Being part of the American Chemical Society’s National Chemistry week, the event was designed to educate the public of all ages about how chemistry is relevant to the ecosystem of Lake Champlain. With chemical demonstrations, custom-designed, clickable 3D-printed molecular models (see Figure), and a large poster, our team’s efforts were focused on discussing how precise molecular shape-control could help to create advanced materials in more sustainable ways.

We have just received the exciting news that our collaborative UVM REACH seed grant — which we wrote together with Assistant Professor Patrick C. Lee from engineering — has been awarded. We are excited to find that our Shimadzu HPLC is providing great chiral separation for our compounds with Lux Chiral Columns® from Phenomenex. Since in our research we are investigating how the chirality of carefully designed molecular building blocks can direct the formation of new complex molecular shapes for selective catalysis and biological recognition, our chiral HPLC represents an invaluable analytical tool for our research program!
