The cancer programs of the VCC, in a collaborative and multidisciplinary setting, are poised to understand the basic mechanisms causing cancer and provide novel dimensions to mechanistically and clinically understand cancer, cancer patients, and their social and physical environments. To this effect, the VCC Core Facilities and Clinical Research Office support initiatives that range from gene regulatory mechanisms to investigator-initiated trials. The VCC cancer programs are exploring unique parameters of psychosocial and behavioral issues that are associated with cancer along with innovative approaches to evaluating quality of care and assessment of health outcomes; emphasis is placed on delivery of cancer screening and treatment to rural and underserved populations.
Basic Science Research
Partnerships of VCC scientists and physician investigators are combining molecular, cellular, biochemical, in vivo genetic, genomic and proteomic strategies to characterize the transition of normal tumor cell and tumor progression. Through team approaches and state-of-the-art experimental strategies, advances are being made in defining cancer-related mechanisms associated with cell cycle and growth control, cell survival and apoptosis, genome instability, signal transduction, tumor metastasis and cancer immunology. High resolution cellular and in vivo molecular imaging provide valuable insight into dimensions of tumor cell structure and function for design of drugs that exhibit high specificity and minimal off target effects.
This Program brings together physicians and researchers who conduct high quality clinical research in all aspects of cancer diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and survivorship. Program members are dedicated to developing and evaluating new and more effective cancer therapies and preventive measures. A major objective of the program is to promote collaboration between clinical, laboratory, and cancer control researchers — a critical step to developing the next generation of cancer therapeutics. This program is focused on exploring new modalities of treatment and chemopreventive measures. Program members conduct research on a broad range of topics that can be categorized into four themes: development of novel therapeutics (translational research), implementation of clinical trials for the treatment or prevention of cancer, evaluation of novel diagnostic tools for cancer, and behavioral research involving cancer patients.
Building on the advances in defining the biology and pathology of tumor cells, our VCC physicians and investigators are translating discoveries of regulatory pathways into prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer. Through collaborations that bridge academic and clinical boundaries, the VCC is developing options for treatment of tumors that are refractory to conventional therapy, providing a platform for clinical trials and the next generation of patient care.
