Message from the Chair
I have the distinct honor of being the interim Chair for the Department of Surgery at the University of Vermont. The University of Vermont’s College of Medicine has a close alliance with Fletcher Allen Health Care, a high quality hospital in a rural setting.
We carry on our proud tradition of being expert educators, researchers, and innovators. Our faculty continues to grow as we recruit faculty with premiere training and expertise. We welcome the addition of Jesse Moore (General Surgery), Margaret Tandoh (Trauma and Critical Care), Donald Leopold (Otolaryngology), Michelle Sowden (Surgical Oncology), John Lawrence (Pediatric Surgery), Houman Hemmati (Ophthalmology), Gladys Lee (Ophthalmology), Chip Merriam (General Surgery), Eric Sargent (Urology), Mariah McNamara (Emergency Medicine), Brian Sprague (Epidemiology, Surgical Oncology), and Chris Jones (Healthcare Economist).
We value our educational programs. We have 26 medical students in our Surgery Senior Majors program and three of our Surgery residents won the Humanitarian Award this year. The Department won the Silver Shovel Award, voted by the graduating medical school class to be the best department for clinical training. Our residents are routinely going to superb fellowships.
Research efforts are expanding and include collaboration with the Center for Clinical and Translational Science with our Healthcare Economist, Chris Jones, DPhil. Our basic science and translational science efforts are growing as well.
Finally, our philanthropy efforts are thriving with the institution of the Robert Sofferman, MD Lectureship in Endocrine Surgery this year. We currently have six named lectureships and eight endowed professorships.
We succeed because we are a team. I am indebted to Mitch Norotsky, MD, James Hebert, MD, John Fortune, MD, Mark Plante, MD, Neil Hyman, MD, Andy Stanley, MD, and David Tinker, JD and Rock Rockwell, MBA. The Executive Council provides strong leadership as well. Finally, our faculty and staff remain our greatest asset. We are proud to be part of Vermont’s academic medical center during these exciting times. We strive to put the patient first in everything that we do by excelling in quality care.
