Program in Integrative Health

Leaders and Members

The University of Vermont has experienced an increasing interest in complementary and alternative therapies and integrative health care over the last ten years. In 1998, one year after the formation of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), UVM researcher Helene Langevin, M.D., associate professor of neurology, was awarded an R01 NCCAM Research Project Grant to study the biomechanical effect of acupuncture needling. Since then, Dr. Langevin has continued her innovative research to demystify acupuncture, gaining national and international attention for her work which now extends to the study of manual and movement-based therapies on connective tissue.

The Program in Integrative Health was created in 2004; in October of 2006 the University of Vermont College of Medicine was accepted for membership in the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, joining 37 other academic centers with a mission to further understanding and knowledge in integrative health.

In addition, the Program in Integrative Health is collaborating with the Laura Mann Center for Integrative Health to establish an integrative health network. This network will promote education and understanding between and among CAM and conventional clinicians, increase options for patient care and encourage information sharing between conventional and CAM therapists.
