Our Faculty

Welcome to our new faculty member Dr. Kelley McLean who completed her residency and fellowship in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care. Her clinical interests are related to care in labor and delivery, including work with Obstetric simulation. Her research is focused on coagulation changes during pregnancy.

Education

With an active Ph.D.-supported research program, a 4-year residency in Ob/Gyn, and University of Vermont medical student clerkships as well as visiting medical students from other universities, we are actively involved in the education of the future leaders of our field. The fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine has one fellow position available for each of three years. The fellowship is committed to a high-quality mentored research experience either within or in affiliation with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology examining the basic mechanisms and pathophysiology of disorders of pregnancy.

Research

The faculty within Maternal Fetal Medicine have established a broad based approach to research interests covering a wide range of issues central to maternal and fetal medicine practice. External research funding is currently in place supporting research programs in these areas. The areas under investigation include quality assessment and improvement and outcomes research supported by Vermont Children’s and Infants Program (VCHIP), a program aligned with the Vermont Department of Health. Hypothesis driven basic science research support includes investigation into both clinical and animal physiology, with a focus on vascular adaptation related to fetal growth restriction and preeclampsia, as well as cellular, sub-cellular and genetic mechanisms associated with myometrial growth and activation and risk for preterm delivery. Additional active investigations include population based studies of the impact of obesity on pregnancy outcomes in Vermont and alterations of coagulation parameters during pregnancy.

Collaboration with the Reproductive Investigation division within the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, led by Elizabeth Bonney, M.D., is close with monthly joint research meetings and coordination of research priorities and funding applications. Research affiliations have also been forged with the Departments of Biochemistry, Medicine, Neurology and Pharmacology within the University of Vermont College of Medicine.

Patient Care
