Basic Science Research

Current research programs focus on the mechanisms regulating neuronal degeneration, regeneration and plasticity. Special emphasis is placed on the mechanisms underlying vascular control in ischemia and stroke; growth factor function in neurodegenerative diseases and spinal cord injury, neuronal function in inflamed tissues, and mechanisms in acupuncture. Sources funding these studies include the National Institutes of Health, Foundations and Individual Donors.

The integration of basic research with new clinical approaches and insights holds the promise of future treatments for diverse and currently untreatable neurological conditions. The neuroscience community at the University of Vermont is actively integrating clinical approaches with research studies and educational programs. A substantial grant from the National Institutes of Health (COBRE) supports this effort.
