Message from the Division Chief
Our clinical and research faculty, fellows-in-training, and staff are dedicated to outstanding patient care, innovative research, and excellence in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Our academic and research efforts are integrated with our clinical care responsibilities at The University of Vermont Medical Center.
We conduct internationally renowned multi-disciplinary research in lung disease, with programs in physiology, stem cell biology, immunology, acute lung injury, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Clinical trials have led to major advances in our understanding and treatment of these diseases. Our researchers have made seminal advances in the biology and treatment of lung disease, and many have leadership positions in the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
Our faculty educators have a leadership role in the medical school curriculum, including running the respiratory section of the award-winning Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Renal Systems Foundations course. We train two fellows each year in a three-year Pulmonary and Critical Care training program. Our goal is to train fellows to be outstanding physicians able to achieve success in a variety of career pathways.
In our clinics, we have dedicated programs in lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, and COPD. In the Medical Intensive Care Unit we constantly strive to provide high quality multi-disciplinary care; we have been at the forefront of implementing quality improvement initiatives to ensure that the most advanced care is provided to our patients.
