Certificate of Graduate Study in Public Health
Public health is a dynamic and challenging, multidisciplinary field
blending public policy, research, and population health sciences. The
focus of public health is on promoting healthy practices and preventing
disease among entire populations, rather than on treating individual
illness.

The University of Vermont’s online Certificate of Graduate Study in
Public Health enables students to explore current public health and
health policy issues while gaining a strong foundation in population
health sciences including epidemiology, biostatistics and environmental
health.
The program is designed for medical and graduate students, health

wish to increase their knowledge in the vital field of public health. It
also prepares graduates for advanced study at the masters and doctoral

Overview
The Certificate of Graduate Study in Public Health is an 18-credit, one-year online program. Among the highlights:
- Five required courses (15 credits) from five core content areas as
well as one elective course (3 credits) from a relevant area of your
choosing.
- The five core content areas cover:
- Public Health and Health Policy
- Epidemiology
- Biostatistics
- Environmental Health
- Health Policy and Management
- Students may choose from a variety of topical electives, including:
- Global Public Health
- Food Systems and Public Health
- Public Health Law
- Faculty experts from UVM’s College of Medicine, College of Nursing
and Health Sciences, the Vermont Department of Health, and experts
trained at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- Individualized academic advising
- Courses are offered during spring, fall and summer terms to ensure
that you can fit the program into your work or college schedule.
Who Should Apply?
Our graduate-level program is open to anyone with a bachelor’s degree. It is designed for:
- Medical and graduate students in health, nursing and environmental sciences.
- Healthcare practitioners trained in medicine, nursing or other healthcare professions.
- Non-clinical professionals working in public health, healthcare, government and non-profit agencies.
Eligibility
- Highly motivated students with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- One college-level course in mathematics required
- One college-level course in science required
