Film: "The Revolutionary Optimists"

Time: 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location: Flynn Space
Description: The Flynn Center partners with Vermont Public Television and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at University of Vermont to present Community Cinema in FlynnSpace. Community Cinema is a free monthly screening series showcasing the Emmy Award-winning PBS Series Independent Lens. A new film is previewed at these screenings one month prior to the scheduled broadcast of each film on Vermont Public Television. Following each hour-long film, a community discussion that expands on and examines the film is presented.

"The Revolutionary Optimists"

Children in the slums of Calcutta are starting a revolution. Called to action by visionary former attorney Amlan Ganguly, the 'Daredevils' have already made radical health and sanitation improvements in one of the city's poorest slums--awakening a neglected populace to the real possibility of change.

Film: "Love Free or Die"

Love Free or Die is about a man whose two defining passions the world cannot reconcile: his love for God and for his partner Mark. The film is about church and state, love and marriage, faith and identity—and openly gay Bishop Eugene Robinson's struggle to dispel the notion that God’s love has limits.

Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf.

Health Equity Film & Discussion: "The Waiting Room"

Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Location: MEC 200- Sullivan Classroom
Description: The Waiting Room is a character-driven documentary film that uses extraordinary access to go behind the doors of an American public hospital struggling to care for a community of largely uninsured patients. The film – using a blend of cinema verité and characters’ voiceover – offers a raw, intimate, and even uplifting look at how patients, staff and caregivers each cope with disease, bureaucracy and hard choices.

Description: Second-year medical students, as well as faculty mentors and community service agency contacts will participate in the annual Public Health Projects Poster Session and Community Celebration on Wed., Jan. 22, at 3:30 p.m. in the Health Science Research Facility's Hoehl Gallery.

Health Equity Keynote Speaker -Adewale Troutman, MD, MPH

Time: 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Location: MEC 200 - Sullivan Classroom
Description: Health Equity and the Social Determinants of Health

For more than 40 years, Dr. Troutman has studied and worked to advance health equity and to eliminate racism and other social injustices. Founder of the nation's first Center for Health Equity at Metro Louisville Department of Public Health and Wellness, Dr. Troutman is featured in the documentary, "Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?"

Dr. Troutman will share his insights about how social determinants of health --where people live, learn, work and play -- affect health, and what physicians can do to address these factors.
