Office of Primary Care/Area Health Education Centers
The University of Vermont College of Medicine AHEC Program is a statewide network of community and academic partners working together through three AHEC centers and a Program Office to improve the health of Vermonters.
Encouraged by the Vermont Legislature, the University of Vermont College of Medicine established the Office of Primary Care (OPC) in 1993 to focus the College of Medicine's commitment to primary care in Vermont. OPC is actively involved in enhancing networks of community faculty, in strengthening teaching and research programs, and in preparing the workforce for the future. Learn more.
Elementary Level
Smile Docs
The SmileDocs program is a 15 year-old effort that brings medical students into elementary schools to teach elementary children about health and the human body. About two dozen
students regularly head out to local elementary schools to run SmileDoc sessions. These groups visit the same classrooms several times in a semester, with one of a number of educative modules that have been developed by the group over the years.

This program provides an opportunity for second-year medical students to learn about adolescence from adolescents. Both groups of learners benefit enormously from the experience, which is often considered the highlight of Generations, a seven-week course that covers topics ranging from reproduction to death.
Project Micro
Project Micro, a national model of successful community interaction, uses microscopy to foster scientific interest in young people, reaching schools in every corner of Vermont with hands-on microscopy sessions.
Girl's Science Discovery Day
Girls Science Day is an event meant to inspire young women to consider careers in the field of medical sciences and clinical medicine. Each year, participants experience a fun-filled day of workshops, science activities, and keynote speakers with the hopes to motivate and get these students excited about medical sciences. Middle-school-aged girls from schools across Vermont participate in this annual outreach activity, sponsored by the University of Vermont College of Medicine's chapter of the American Medical Women's Association's student chapter at UVM and staffed by medical students,.
