From the Brummel-Ziedins Laboratory
Dr. Brummel Ziedins’ research interest focuses on the mechanisms of hemorrhage and thrombosis in individuals using a multidisciplinary systems approach. She uses empirical and mathematical models that allow the investigation of the enzymatic events leading up to and following clot formation and how they alter in various disease states and how that knowledge can be applied to understanding the conversion from “normal/healthy” into pathologic states. Her research goals include: 1) determining mechanistic basis for underlying changes to thrombin dynamics; 2) developing individualized blood coagulation profiles that investigate the mechanistic alterations to the pro and anticoagulant hemostatic balance; and 3) translating findings into useable clinical tools that predict risk pre-crisis.
