The UVM Approach

Student Centered Education
Defining your career as a physician is an act only you can perform--and the innovative and supportive community at UVM may be the best place to make that choice. Instruction shifts from being teacher-directed to being student-directed,
encouraging graduates to develop strong lifelong learning habits.
UVM has been in the forefront of clinical teaching for medical students for decades, and established a new nationally acclaimed model with its Vermont Integrated Curriculum. Student interaction with patients is integrated into medical education from the very first courses.
UVM students are assessed individually by curriculum standards--not against each other--and this helps promote a collaborative environment where students work together. The overall dynamic is cooperative not competitive.

Active in Our Community
It's impossible to draw a line between our campus and our community. Our medical student interest groups offer many opportunities to get involved with everything from local, national, and international politics, to helping locally with refugee restettlement in Vermont, to teaching health topics in local elementary schools.
UVM College of Medicine faculty are frequently renowned researchers, but they also love to teach. Our faculty are known for being accessible outside class, too.
Faculty members interact with medical students throughout the curriculum, participating in basic science courses, clinical medicine courses, public health seminars, and serving as advisors to student groups and individuals.

Research Excellence You Can Be a Part Of
Whether they work at the laboratory bench or in the clinic, researchers at the College of Medicine advance knowledge on a wide range of important health care issues, and garner more than $93 million in extramutral funding to do so.
All students are required to participate in public health research and student projects have resulted in publication in leading journals, and have examined health-related problems from rural Vermont to the Himalayas.
College of Medicine Education Tools (COMET), is the electronic backbone of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum and has won national awards for its melding of of high-tech and high touch. Clinical education includes working with one of the most advanced Electronic Medicial Record systems in the nation, as well as a state-of-the-art clinical simulation laboratory.
Our location on the campus of the state's flagship university in one of the country's "most liveable cities" provides students with a wealth of educational and recreational opportunities. Our students have diverse interests both inside and outside of the classroom, ranging from playing music in local clubs and rock climbing, to club sports and, of course, taking advantage of all the recreational opportunites Vermont has to offer.
UVM medical graduates have made a name for themselves, and their alma mater, both near and far. Whether its Mario Trabulsy, M.D.'91, an emergency medicine doctor who's deeply involved with both her patients and the medical curriculum on campus, or Keiji Fukuda, M.D.'83, who helped guide the world-side response to H1N1 influenza from his position at the World Health Organization in Geneva, or any ofte 4000 UVM alumni practicing today--UVM educated physicians make the world a better place, one patient at a time.
