It takes a team to educate the next generation of physicians, and on March 14, members of the University of Vermont College of Medicine Class of 2015 had the opportunity to recognize some of the residents who made exceptional teaching contributions during their Clerkship Year.

An annual event, the Student Clinician Ceremony was held in Davis Auditorium and featured the presentation of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards to residents who were voted by students as top educators and mentors. As they marked their transition into the final year of medical school, the Class of 2015 also welcomed the Class of 2016 to the start of their clerkship rotations at the College’s clinical training sites: Fletcher Allen Health Care, Danbury Hospital (Conn.), Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center (Fla.).

Following opening remarks from William Jeffries, Ph.D., senior associate dean for medical education, students heard from UVM College of Medicine Dean Frederick C. Morin III, M.D., and Fletcher Allen Health Care Chief Medical Officer Stephen Leffler, M.D. UVM Assistant Professor of Family Medicine Ursula McVeigh, M.D., the 2013 recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, was the keynote speaker.

Tania Bertsch, M.D., associate dean for clinical education, presented gifts to members of the Class of 2016. She also presented the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards to the residents. Residents from Fletcher Allen and affiliate sites were nominated for these honors.

Foundations Director Paula Tracy, Ph.D., presented the Wasserman and Ring Awards to members of the Class of 2016. James Levins garnered the Wasserman Award and scholarship prize. Named for Henry Wasserman, M.D., it honors students with the highest academic achievement. Second-place recipients are Sarah Ebert, Laura Griesinger, Blake Leavitt, and Brenton Nash. The Ring Award, established by the family of Albert Ring, M.D., honors Ring's memory and what his family felt were the most important attributes of a physician: Compassion, humor, humility, and devotion to family and friends. This year's recipient is Mutlay Sayan.
