Ira Bernstein, M.D., senior associate dean for research and chair of the UVM Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, will be stepping down from his senior associate dean role at the College effective March 1, 2014. Professor of Medicine Richard Galbraith, M.D., Ph.D., associate dean for research and director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, has been appointed as interim senior associate dean to serve while the College conducts a national search for this leadership position.

Bernstein, who joined UVM/Fletcher in 1987, has served as senior associate dean for research since April 2009. In June 2012, he was named John Van Sicklen Maeck M.D.’39 Chair of the UVM Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences and Health Care Service Leader of the Women’s Health Care Service at Fletcher Allen. After serving in both roles for 20 months, Bernstein has elected to step down from his senior associate dean role in order to focus on his role as chair and his work as a principal investigator.

Galbraith, who joined the UVM faculty in 1995, has been serving in an expanded role in support of the central research enterprise, in addition to his roles as associate dean for research and director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science.

“Dr. Bernstein is an experienced clinician and clinical/translational investigator with a wealth of administrative experience who implemented a number of improved processes for investigators during his tenure as Senior Associate Dean,” says Frederick Morin, III, M.D., dean of the UVM College of Medicine. “Dr. Galbraith is also an experienced administrator who has been serving in an expanded role in support of the central research enterprise, so we are well prepared for a smooth transition as we conduct a national search for this important role at the College.”
