Vermont Cancer Center co-director and University of Vermont Chair of Biochemistry Gary Stein, Ph.D., received the Gideon Rodan Excellence in Mentorship Award from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) during the Society’s annual meeting, held October 4 through 7, 2013, in Baltimore, Md.
This award, which honors Gideon A. Rodan, M.D., the ninth ASBMR president and first recipient of the ASBMR Excellence in Mentorship Award that now bears his name, is presented annually to recognize an outstanding senior scientist who has helped promote the independent careers of young investigators in bone and mineral metabolism. Throughout his career, Rodan was a pioneer in and major contributor to the field of bone cell biology.
To date, Stein has mentored over 150 students, many of whom have gone on to be leaders themselves in the field of bone science. He continues to teach more than 20 graduate and post-graduate investigators.
“I’m honored by this award,” says Stein. “The opportunity to mentor future scientists and physician-investigators is a gift and I’m very lucky to have had the chance to work with so many talented students during my career.”
Stein was presented with the award at a dinner held on October 3, 2013 during the ASBMR’s annual meeting.
