Dittus and Lakoski Discuss Wrap Up Spring Series of Community Medical School
- By Jennifer Nachbur
The Spring 2013 Community Medical School series wrapped up on Tuesday, May 14, with a presentation titled “Cancer and Exercise: Improving Physical Function and Cardiopulmonary Health During and After Treatment” by Kim Dittus, M.D., PhD., University of Vermont assistant professor of medicine and Fletcher Allen Health Care oncologist, and Susan Lakoski, M.D., UVM assistant professor of medicine and director of the Cardiovascular Prevention Program for Cancer Patients at Fletcher Allen. The two physician-researchers discussed how cancer and cancer therapy can significantly impair physical function and cardiopulmonary health, how this decline can occur during cancer therapy, may continue long after therapy is completed, and shared exciting research findings regarding the preventative effects of measurable fitness. The talk also featured an overview of a UVM/Fletcher Allen model of oncology rehabilitation called Steps to Wellness, which incorporates fitness testing and exercise both during and after cancer treatment.
