Today, Fletcher Allen Partners named John R. Brumsted, M.D., as president and chief executive officer, Fletcher Allen Health Care, effective immediately. Brumsted, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, has been serving as the organization’s interim president and chief executive officer since the departure of Melinda Estes, M.D., this past August. Brumsted, 59, will also serve as the president and chief executive officer of Fletcher Allen Partners, an integrated delivery system comprising Fletcher Allen Health Care and Central Vermont Medical Center.

In making the announcement, Roger Stone, chair of both the Fletcher Allen Board of Trustees and the Fletcher Allen Partners Board of Trustees, as well as chair of the search committee said, “The caliber of the candidates for this position validates the stature of Fletcher Allen in the world of academic medicine. There were many highly-qualified candidates, but at the end of a rigorous process, the search committee concluded that Dr. Brumsted was the right person to lead our organization. The search committee’s recommendation of Dr. Brumsted to the Fletcher Allen Board and subsequently to the Fletcher Allen Partners Board was unanimously adopted.”

Fletcher Allen Board approval is required on the search committee’s recommendation. In addition, Fletcher Allen’s parent board, Fletcher Allen Partners, must approve CEO appointments for both Fletcher Allen and for Central Vermont Medical Center.

“At this moment in time when so much is at stake in health care, we need someone who is absolutely committed to making the system work in Vermont and someone who has established relationships with our many stakeholders. John is that person,” said Gretchen Morse, vice chair of the Fletcher Allen Board, and a member of both the Fletcher Allen Partners Board and the CEO Search Committee. “As a physician, his passion for high-quality patient care is well-known and he has devoted a large part of his career to advancing improvements in how care is delivered throughout the broader health care system. I have no doubt he will sustain and improve upon our achievements as a high-performing organization. It’s exciting to have him lead Fletcher Allen.”

“I feel honored and humbled as I take on this role,” said Brumsted. “Fletcher Allen is made up of an extraordinary group of dedicated and caring men and women – 7,000 strong. It is a privilege to work with them as they deliver high quality care to our patients and their families.

In this very dynamic health care environment we will face many challenges, but in these challenges lie many opportunities as well.” he continued. “Knowing Fletcher Allen as well as I do, having been in the organization for 30 years, I am confident that we will overcome the challenges and take full advantage of the opportunities to become stronger and better able to meet the needs of our community and region.”

Prior to being named interim president and chief executive officer in August 2011, Brumsted has enjoyed a varied and successful career at Fletcher Allen. He served Fletcher Allen most recently as chief medical officer. He has also served as chief quality officer, senior associate dean for clinical affairs at the UVM College of Medicine, and medical director of The Vermont Health Plan and Vermont Managed Care. He also served as Fletcher Allen’s interim president and chief executive officer for an eight-month period in the late 1990s.

"The partnership between UVM and Fletcher Allen is essential to the future success of both institutions, and I am very pleased that Fletcher Allen has chosen a proven and effective leader in Dr. John Brumstead," said John Bramley, Ph.D., interim president, University of Vermont. "Dr. Brumsted knows Vermont, and he knows the organization inside and out, and I am convinced that he will continue the upward trajectory that Fletcher Allen has been on in recent years. John and I have worked closely together for many years, and he is a trusted and valued colleague. I have every confidence that he and UVM's new president will have a fruitful and productive relationship as well. John Brumstead is an inspired choice as the new leader of Fletcher Allen Health Care and Fletcher Allen Partners."

Brumsted received his B.A. in liberal arts from Dartmouth College and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School in 1978. He completed a surgical internship at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, Conn., in 1979. He subsequently served in the U.S. Public Health Service in Randolph, N.Y. for two years prior to moving to Vermont to complete his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at UVM/Fletcher Allen from 1981to 1985. He then completed a fellowship in the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Fletcher Allen in 1987. Brumsted is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility and is a member of Fletcher Allen’s department of obstetrics and gynecology.

Currently a member of the Vermont Medical Society (VMS) Council and chair of the VMS Research and Education Foundation Board, Brumsted has published extensively, both nationally and regionally.
