Cushman Receives AHA 2011 Crystal Heart Award

Mary Cushman, M.D., University of Vermont professor of medicine and pathology and director of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Program at Fletcher Allen, received the 2011 Crystal Heart Award at the fifth annual Vermont Go Red For Women Luncheon hosted by the American Heart Association (AHA) Founders Affiliate at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel and Conference Center on February 16. Cari Kelly, 2010 Crystal Heart Award recipient and executive director of the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Champlain Program, presented the award.

The Crystal Heart Award “celebrates the success and commitment of a local woman who has served as an advocate, a volunteer and a role model for improving the health of women in our community,” said Kelly in her remarks. Cushman was recognized for her long-time support of the local AHA affiliate – before and after the launch of the AHA’s national Go Red For Women campaign – and continued participation and efforts to involve her colleagues in the local Heart Walk, as well as for her service as an ambassador for the AHA’s “You’re the Cure” advocacy effort and national leadership as chair of the AHA’s Scientific Council on Epidemiology and Prevention.
