Current and Recent Projects
Current and recent College of Medicine projects are described with links to more information. Additionally, Facilities Updates are archived below.
Given South Entrance Renovation
The renovation of the Given South entrance consists of a complete replacement of the existing covered entry with new elements stylistically similar to those incorporated in a covered entry to the original Bradley Soule Medical Alumni Building, circa 1965.
The doors, sidelights and handrails will function and look the same as in the past, but will now meet all current energy and building code requirements. The existing concrete stair treads and floor planks will be replaced with similar new ones. The existing aluminum-framed canvas roof canopy will be replaced by a self-supporting steel roof platform containing recessed lights and covered with a new stone-ballasted membrane roof.
Larner Classroom for Team Based Learning
This project is a $1.25 million renovation of space in the Larner Medical Education Center at the Dana Library to create a new team based learning space. Accommodating 120 students, the space can be configured for both small and large group functions. Advanced educational technology will be employed including large display monitors, audience response system, advanced video and sound system and capacity to interface with existing learning management systems. The anticipated completion date is summer 2014 for student use beginning in the fall. See the floor plan (PDF) and timeline (PDF).
Given Atrium Cafeteria
A $1 million dollar upgrade to the food service facilities in the Given Atrium cafeteria has been designed for completion during this summer. The University has worked with SAS Architects and Sodexo to redesign the food service area and retail space. An electronic survey was conducted last year and open forums were held to gather faculty, staff and student input to help form the new food service design. The contractor will be selected during April with construction slated to begin in May. The project will be completed in August and open for business in the new school year.
State Public Health Lab Collaboration
The State will be constructing a new 60,000 SF building for the state health labs, with a connection to our Colchester Research Facility. The project plan calls for sharing of common facilities, such as conference rooms, as well as cooperative arrangements for specialized lab facilities and dedicated office space. The construction is expected to be completed by September 2014. See the exterior concept plan (PDF), schedule (PDF) and construction update (PDF).
