Still Time to Register for Off-Season Gardening Program

Montpelier--The early bird discount for the Gardening in the Off Season event, Oct. 21 in Montpelier, ends Oct. 13. Interested gardeners are encouraged to sign up soon.

The event is coordinated by the University of Vermont (UVM) Extension Master Gardener program and the Central Vermont Master Gardener Chapter. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the North Branch Nature Center (NBNC).

The early bird registration is $75 if received by Oct. 13, $85 after that date. The fee for Extension Master Gardeners from Vermont and neighboring states is $50 or $60 for late registrations. Lunch, refreshments and all materials are included.

Anyone who also enrolls in the 2018 online Extension Master Gardener course will receive a $25 credit towards the course fee. Program speakers include horticulture expert and author Will Creed on year-round houseplant care and Dr. Ann Hazelrigg, UVM Plant Diagnostic Clinic director, on Vermont garden pests and diseases. Cassandra Hemenway, Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District, will discuss winter composting and Vermont's new universal recycling and composting law.

Mike Ather, an Extension Master Gardener, Extension Master Composter and owner of Backyard Wilderness in Middlesex, will share insights into growing vegetables and herbs under lights. Participants also can take a nature walk with Chip Darmstadt, NBNC executive director.
