Residential TAP Courses

Residential TAP Courses

TAP Courses with Residential Component

A number of Teacher Advisor Program (TAP) courses being offered to new first-year students in the College of Arts and Sciences during the 2009-2010 academic year offer a residential option. Priority for enrollment in these courses will go to students who elect to live together with other students enrolled in the course either in the Living/Learning Center (a residence hall offering suite style housing) or in GreenHouse (a Residential Learning Community located in the new University Heights South complex). The faculty who teach these courses strongly believe that the residential component of the course enhances the learning that takes place, both inside and outside the classroom.

For more information about the Teacher Advisor Program, please visit the College of Arts and Sciences TAP Web site.

The residentially based TAP courses for 2009-2010 are:

What are the advantages of residentially based courses?

Students who have participated in residentially based TAP classes speak highly of the sense of community that forms among members of the class. In many cases, students build friendships that last throughout their academic careers at UVM - and beyond. In recent years, several students who were enrolled in residential TAP courses created new Living/Learning Center programs of their own, giving them the ability to remain together as a community for another year.

Living together enables students to get to know others who share at least one common interest. Furthermore, living together facilitates work on group projects, which are important elements of each of these classes. Faculty have designed syllabi to include projects that take advantage of the fact that students live together. In addition, students in residential TAP classes report that living together facilitates studying and enhances motivation to succeed.

The Living/Learning Center and the Residential Learning Communities provide supplemental funding to residential TAP classes, allowing faculty and students to participate in special events and activities, such as field trips, attending performances at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, hosting special visiting scholars and artists, and sharing meals together.

In some cases, the faculty who teach residential TAP classes either have an office or actually live in faculty apartments in the residence hall, which fosters supportive relationships with students.

How do I sign up?

Admission to residential TAP classes is by application. Priority for enrolling in residential TAP courses is given to students who wish to participate in the residential component.
