Renovation Project

As you may be aware, the Living/Learning Center is scheduled to undergo a major renovation. 2003 marks the beginning of the Center’s 30th year of continuous operation, and our facilities are in need of significant restoration.

Renovation work is scheduled to begin in May, 2004, and be completed by August, 2006 or August, 2007. All work will take place during the summer months, so it should not interfere with normal use of the building during the academic year. Most of the work will take place in Buildings A, B, C, D and E, although some work will occur in the Commons Building.

The scope of the planned renovations is extensive and at this time tentatively includes:

Replacing all exterior windows and doors.
All new heating and ventilating systems (with individual room controls).
Replacing all suite and room furnishings.
New paint, flooring and finishes throughout.
Replacing all interior doors and hardware.
Replacing all plumbing, including complete renovation of bathrooms.
Complete new electrical system.
Replacing roofs and insulating exterior walls.
Installing fire suppression sprinklers and a new fire alarm system.
Updating a number of suites to full ADA compliance.
Completing renovations to the Commons Building.

Although renovations are not scheduled to start until 2004, an architectural firm has been selected and has already begun work. We would like to ask for your help in providing input into this project. We want to know what - from a facility perspective - has worked or not worked for you. We want to make sure that we know about all of the little things (like the light switches in the bedrooms that turn off an outlet) that – if changed – would make life easier.

We are holding two focus groups on Tuesday, March 11, and are interested in hearing from students who are interested in participating in one of these groups. The focus groups will take place at 4:30 and 6:30 and will last approximately 90 minutes each.
