Main Desk - Services

One of the many things Barb does is oversee the L/L Main Desk and Mail Room and its wonderful Desk Staff. In addition to being friendly and fun to work with, they can help you with a wide variety of things, such as:

  • Key Information: It is VERY important to carry your room key with you at all times - even if you are staying within the suite. (This scenario happens a lot - one person in a double room will leave their room to take a shower, forgetting to take their key. Their roommate has to leave for class and locks the door. Taking your key with you will prevent you from getting stuck and locked out of your room) That being said, should you get locked of your room the Main Desk Staff can let you borrow a loaner key to get back in. You may borrow a loaner key up to 3 times per year. Loaner keys must be returned within 24 hours. Upon your request for a loaner key the fourth time, a $25 administrative fine that will be added to your student account. Bottom line here: carry your key with you at all times!

  • Lost Key: If you lose your key, you must, for security reasons, have your lock changed. Please notify Main Desk Staff as soon as possible. There is a $55 charge for this which will be added to your student account.

  • CatCard/UVM ID: In addition to being a means of identification your UVM ID also serves as your exterior door access. Just swipe your card through the CatCard readers for access into your building from outside. Your CatCard is also the means with which you purchase food, do laundry, borrow equipment, movies and lots of other stuff, so keep your CatCard with you at all times. Contact me with any card access problems.

  • Mail and Packages: All mail, packages, flowers, deliveries are delivered to the Mail Room (next to the Fireplace Lounge) and logged in. Make sure to have things addressed to you (not your parents). When a package is delivered for you an email notification will be sent. Please bring your student ID when retrieving packages. Also, outgoing mail slots are located at the Mail Room for stamped mail and free campus mail. You may send packages via UPS, FEDEX and also purchase stamps at Underground Copy located on the lower level of the Davis Center.

  • Room Maintenance: Having a problem in your room and/or suite that needs attention? Blown a fuse? Need a new light bulb? Sink dripping? If there is anything in your room and/or suite that needs attention or fixing, please submit an on-line request by going to and scroll down to the bottom until you see a wrench with the words “Fix-It.” When reporting your problem please be as clear and specific as possible. For instance, if you have a clogged toilet please be prepared to state the bathroom number in which this is happening.

TIP #1: To avoid blowing a fuse (which happens frequently) be sure the appliance you are plugging in is in the “off” mode (like blow dryers, etc.) beforehand. Additionally, be sure your appliance is in the “off” mode again when unplugging to avoid a blown fuse again!

TIP #2: With the exception of E-building residents, PLEASE KNOW that there is one outlet in your room that will only work if the electrical switch is in the “on” position. This may mean that you acquire an extension cord (UVM Bookstore has `em) in order to set-up your room in the way that you'd like. This can be problematic and this cannot be fixed, but this was a “perk” in the olden days (35+ years ago) when the building was built.

TIP #3: Room and/or suite need a little tidying up? The Main Desk has vacuums, brooms, and dustpans that you may borrow too! (See! We have everything you need!) We also have cleaning solution for that extra sparkle! (Bring your empty container for a refill.)

  • Bored? The Main Desk has a wide variety of DVD's, games, and ping and pool table equipment that you may borrow - free of charge. (FYI: DVD's are due back within 48 hours of the time it was originally borrowed with late fines resulting.) These have all been provided to you compliments of L/L's Hall Council. For a complete listing of all movies and games available, please visit the L/L Main Desk.

Since we only have a limited number of items to share among many, many students, we have had to implement a fine system on most of the items in order to get these items back in a timely manner. (Remember what we learned in kindergarten about sharing?) Policies vary depending on the item borrowed, so please be sure to read the appropriate policy, (posted at the Main Desk and below on this page), to avoid charges. If items are not returned within the appropriate timeframe, your student account will be charged accordingly. It is your responsibility to know what your responsibilities are!
