The Photography Co-op

The Photography Co-op is a complete facility whose financial and operational responsibilities are shared by all of its members. Membership includes access to four fully-equipped darkrooms, a developing room, and a matte cutting and framing room, and all chemistry. Open to UVM students, faculty, staff and their families (or equivalent), and community members who are not affiliated with UVM. 2008-2009 fees: $90/semester for UVM affiliates, $180/semester for non-UVM affiliates. Hours for the co-op are 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. weekdays and 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekends.

The Pottery Studio

The Pottery Co-op, directed by Joan Watson, presents an opportunity to work with clay in an informal atmosphere. Membership includes all materials, firings and unlimited use of studio. Non-credit instruction, beginner to advanced, is offered. Open to UVM students, faculty, staff and their families (or equivalent), and community members who are not affiliated with UVM. 2008-2009 fees: $85/semester for UVM affiliates, $180/semester for non-UVM affiliates. The Gallery (Click here for information on the most recent gallery exhibits.)

Located near the Fireplace Lounge in the L/L Commons Building, The Gallery offers students exposure to a variety of artistic media, featuring local, national and international artists. Student exhibits also take place during the second semester. Exhibits change about every five weeks, and each exhibit features an opening reception with the artist. We encourage artists to present slide lectures or informal gallery talks. Exhibits have included: Holography, International AIDS Posters, Holocaust Art, Video Exhibits and Clay Installations, among others.

We are always searching for artists who are interested in exhibiting in this unique gallery. Contact Joan.Watson@uvm.edu for further information.


Living/Learning Center Programs

Each year student, faculty and staff leaders are responsible for creating many Living/Learning Programs which focus on the arts. These year-long programs allow students with similar interests to live together and pursue their artistic ambitions. While programs vary from year-to-year, you may typically expect to choose from the following: Art of Photography, Clay: Pottery, Sculpture and..., Music Appreciation & All that Jazz, and Creative Art. Many other Living/Learning programs incorporate the arts into their activities. Living/Learning Center Arts Initiative


The L/L Arts Initiative will bring together the following residential programs: Anime as an Art Form, Art of Photography, Clay: Pottery, Sculpture and…, Creative Art, DANCE, Fiber Arts & Cultural Patterns, Inkpot and Music Appreciation. These programs will be housed in the E Building of Living/Learning during the 2008-2009 academic year. For more information, contact Ann Barlow, the Director of the Arts Initiative.


Rhythm & Brews Coffeehouse

Each Thursday night from 9:00 - 11:00 p.m. the Living/Learning Fireplace Lounge hosts the Rhythm & Brews Coffeehouse.  Live entertainment combined with free coffee, tea and hot chocolate make for a relaxing atmosphere.  Every other week the coffeehouse features Open Mic Night, where members of our community can showcase their talents. Past performances have included live music, singing, poetry reading, slam poetry, storytelling, theater performances and sign songs, among others.
